Business license vs. personal electrical certificate
Electrical construction businesses must get an electrical contractor license from L&I. General electrical (01) contractors may perform all electrical and telecommunications installations; specialty electrical contractors are limited to categories in WAC 296-46B-920(2). The business must keep an electrical administrator or master electrician assigned. Separately, electricians and administrators hold personal certificates with their own renewal rules.
Electrical contractor license requirements include an original $4,000 electrical/telecommunication contractor surety bond or assignment of savings. Electrical contractors are encouraged to carry general liability insurance, but L&I does not keep records of liability insurance for electrical contractors. If the business performs non-electrical work, contractor registration may also be required.
- Electrical contractor business license: renews every two years.
- Electrician or administrator certificate: generally renews every three years and carries the applicable continuing-education requirement.
- Electrical trainee certificate: follows a separate basic-classroom-instruction path and should not be treated as the same CE cycle.

L&I offers electrical contractor license renewal online, by mail, or in person. Mail and in-person renewal use the renewal notice or Electrical/Telecommunication Contractor's License Renewal Notice form F500-077-000. Applicants should use the fee shown in the current L&I renewal flow or form.

If the business license is expired or suspended
Electrical contractor licenses must be renewed every 2 years. Online renewal requires a current bond or assignment of savings, a current assigned administrator, and no outstanding unpaid citations. If the license has been expired for more than 90 days, the contractor must contact L&I and cannot renew online. A suspended license is a different situation from an ordinary renewal: L&I requires the missing license conditions or the reason for suspension to be resolved before reinstatement.
Does continuing education apply?
24 hours every 3 years: 8 hours NEC changes, 4 hours RCW/WAC, and 12 hours other approved continuing education.
