Washington Contractor Insurance Requirements
Last verified:
Washington contractor insurance is a registration requirement, not a generic quote-shopping topic. L&I requires liability insurance meeting the verified state minimum before a construction contractor can register.
Washington minimum liability insurance requirement
| Requirement | Verified value | Official source |
|---|---|---|
| Public liability + property damage | 200000 public liability + 50000 property damage OR 250000 combined single limit | L&I current Insurance |
| Combined single limit alternative | 250000 combined single limit | L&I current Insurance |
| Certificate holder | L&I must be listed as certificate holder | L&I current Step 2 / New or updated insurance |
Submitting your insurance certificate
L&I must be listed as a certificate holder for liability insurance; originals of bond and insurance are required to complete registration. For renewal updates, L&I requires a new certificate of general liability insurance for at least $250,000 and does not accept insurance certificates by email or fax.
Keeping insurance current
Before renewal, contractors should verify general liability insurance is up to date. If insurance company or coverage amount changed since last renewal, information must be updated before renewal. A registration may be suspended when bond or insurance cancels or expires.
Electrical and plumbing are separate paths
Electrical contractor licensing has separate rules. Electrical contractor license requirements include an original $4,000 electrical/telecommunication contractor surety bond or assignment of savings. Electrical contractors are encouraged to carry general liability insurance, but L&I does not keep records of liability insurance for electrical contractors. If the business performs non-electrical work, contractor registration may also be required.
Plumbing contractor licensing also has separate rules. Plumbing contractor licensing requires a separate $6,000 plumbing contractor surety bond or assigned savings account and $250,000 certificate of liability insurance. A general contractor who also wants to perform plumbing work needs a separate plumbing contractor license and separate bond; liability insurance may be the same policy but requires a separate certificate for each license/registration.
